Social drinkers tend to consume alcohol with friends while celebrating or even relaxing, or they may have a glass of wine (or two) with dinner at home.  This sounds innocent enough, but if you have tried to lose weight in the past with little or no luck, your consumption of alcohol could be having an effect on your attempts at weight loss.

People may be very careful to keep track of what they eat as a means of lowering calories, and yet totally disregard the calorie content of what they drink.  Water doesn't have any calories, but many people have a hard time drinking water all the time and with all of their meals.  And besides, didn't you hear somewhere that drinking wine is actually good for  you?

While it may be true that red wine contains a chemical called resveratrol that comes from grape skins and aids in lowering your cholesterol, there are other ways to lower your cholesterol that don't involve alcohol.  Wine, in moderation, is fine once you have reached your weight loss goal, but drinking more than a glass a day (and before you reach your goal weight) could be sabotaging your weight loss efforts.

The body metabolizes alcohol slowly, and if you drink quite a bit, especially without eating, you will feel the effects for some time, especially the morning after you drink.  Alcohol contains calories just like any food or drink that you consume, and though the body doesn't store alcohol (it doesn't need it) your body uses it as fuel until all of the alcohol has left your system.

The body will continue to burn alcohol and use it as an energy source instead of stored fat, as long as it is in your bloodstream.  But the stored fat is what you want your body to utilize if you are trying to lose weight, and the best way to get rid of the stored fat is to burn it off.

For you beer drinkers, beer isn't in the clear here either.  Beer is loaded with calories, and having more than one or two at a time can really pack on the weight, especially around the waistline.  They don't call it a 'beer gut' for nothing!

If you feel like you must have alcohol, don't neglect to have something to eat along with it, preferably something healthy and low calorie.  Try to limit your alcohol to one light beer or one glass of wine per day at most.  Your potential to burn fat, and ultimately to lose weight and keep it off, is slowed down by the energy needed to burn the alcohol you're drinking.
